Rochefort was named after the fortress (rocha fortis) constructed by the first Lords of Rochefort, the Montaigus, on a rocky spur. The castle has known an eventful history, many times besieged because of its strategic position, transformed into a palace, nationalized, and used as a quarry by resourceful and pragmatic inhabitants, it is now an important archaeological and historical site.
